Kommuninvest publishes Climate Plan 2026 with long-term targets to support the local government sector’s climate transition
Pressrelease
Municipalities and regions play an important role in Sweden’s climate transition. They are responsible for many of the investments needed to contribute to reduced greenhouse gas emissions, while also ensuring long-term financial sustainability. Today, Kommuninvest publishes its Climate Plan 2026, which describes how Kommuninvest supports municipalities, regions and municipal companies in contributing to Sweden’s target of achieving climate neutrality by 2045.
Climate Plan 2026 is based on Kommuninvest’s role as a financing partner to the local government sector and focuses on the emissions associated with investments financed through Kommuninvest’s lending, including housing, energy, infrastructure, and healthcare.
Kommuninvest’s overarching long-term goal is for financed emissions in the lending portfolio to decrease in line with, or faster than, Sweden’s national target of achieving climate neutrality by 2045. To guide progress in the shorter term, Kommuninvest has established sector-specific targets for 2030 covering the most significant parts of the lending portfolio, which account for approximately 75 per cent of financed emissions.
- Through financing, dialogue and collaboration, we aim to strengthen the local government sector’s ability to contribute to Sweden’s climate goals. Kommuninvest provides tools and support to municipalities and regions in a transition that must be both ambitious and financially sustainable. Access to long-term and cost-effective financing is an important prerequisite for enabling the transition,” says Maria Viimne, CEO of Kommuninvest.
Climate strategy built around four key areas
To contribute in a structured way to reducing emissions and supporting the transition, Kommuninvest has identified four strategic areas that will guide and further develop its climate work.
- Climate transition through dialogue and collaboration with members and customers.
- Research and analysis to strengthen knowledge of climate issues, investments and local government finances.
- Sustainable finance through the continued development of products such as Green Loans.
- Integration of climate and sustainability considerations into lending and risk management.
*Climate Plan 2026 is a public summary of Kommuninvest’s climate transition work, based on an internally developed transition plan for climate change mitigation adopted by the Board of Directors of Kommuninvest i Sverige AB. The plan has been developed in line with relevant aspects of the EU sustainability reporting framework and international guidance for transition plans for financial institutions. It will be reviewed and further developed over time as knowledge evolves, data availability improves and circumstances change. Kommuninvest’s previous Climate Plan was published in 2022 and is now replaced by this updated version.
