Towards additional social perspectives in financing

Kommuninvest contributes through effective and sustainable financing of municipal investments in long-term sustainable welfare in Sweden’s municipalities and regions. We are developing a new methodology for integrating social factors into our provision of credit. A new product specifically targets systematic efforts surrounding social initiatives.
Accordingly, our efforts to foster social sustainability encompass both our traditional offering, as well as new approaches to addressing credit provision. Also central are sustainability in our own organisation, as well as our active commitment to a social financing market in Sweden.

Social Sustainability Loans – for social initiatives driving society forward

To foster development towards increased social sustainability in Swedish municipalities and regions, Kommuninvest has launched Social Sustainability Loans. This financing format serves to strengthen local and regional sustainability efforts, to make them more visible and to foster improved governance, impact assessment and review.

We seek, in various ways, to advance the development of financing practices for social initiatives. We are, for example, members of the group that has developed a new standard for impact assessment of initiatives, as a tool for stimulating more harmonised approaches in the area, and an improved impact assessment culture in Sweden.

Social factors in the credit process

In 2023, an initial set of environmental and climate-oriented key factors was introduced and monitored through our credit provision operations. Efforts are being extended to include social factors conceivably affecting the financial positions of our borrowers. The aim is to complete an initial version of such assessment factors during 2024.

Sustainable organisation

To succeed in our mission, having a sustainable organisation is crucial. Among other things, this entails striving for an organisation characterised by a strong culture and favourable working conditions, with healthy and motivated employees and managers and in which continuous learning is stimulated. It also entails fostering equality, diversity and development and being an inclusive (non-discriminatory) workplace. For our employees, we apply a target scenario for a Sustainable Day-to-day Life and seek to foster a healthy lifestyle, with a balance between work, leisure and parenting.

Social commitment and local coordination

To derive increased benefit from our efforts, we engage on relevant social issues and partner with others. Through the Viable Cities innovation programme, we focus in particular on financing aspects for cities working with Climate Contract 2030. We are partnering with Public Housing Sweden and the IVL environmental institute focused on financing and climate road maps for the public housing companies.

Our local collaboration programme focuses on education, culture and leadership – we seek partners with a pronounced social commitment and values matching ours.
